CLASSES

TOWARDS ABSTRACTION

Would you like your paintings to have a more contemporary feel? Are you fed up with just painting realistically and would like to try being looser, more abstract and more expressive? Being less realistic and literal enables us to have more of our own input in to a painting and more freedom. You may feel stuck in a certain style. If this chimes then this could be the class for you. We will do simple but powerful exercises to try new mark making, new techniques and new ways of thinking about your art. Working from photographs we will hone in to the essence of an image and explore what you want to say and how you want your paintings to feel.

We will use acrylics mainly and water based paints but explore collage and mixed media too. Collage is a great way to build up a painting quickly and encourages bolder moves! It can then be toned down to be quite subtle if desired.

You will be able to develop your style by taking risks and stretching yourself.

We will look at other artists with slides and analyse their paintings to see what makes their paintings successful and see if we can adapt any of their ideas to our own.

Part of my mission is to make you feel at home and let you share my lovely studio and make it a place you can relax and create art. It will be fun, non-judgemental and non-competitive. It will be cosy and warm in winter!

My own journey in paint is towards abstraction and this is what I thinks about most days while I am painting, I am looking forward to sharing this with you.

I am an experienced teacher having taught at West Dean College for 6 years, Skyros Holidays In Greece for 15 years, The Moray Art Centre at Findhorn and in my own studio where I have taught my art classes for the last 10 years.

Classes will be ongoing.

Do get in touch if you have any questions.

TESTIMONIAL

‘Stoney is taking us on an exploratory journey through colours, shapes, design and feeling with enthusiasm and encouragement to find the artist within each of us.  She provides a warming ambiance in her own studio working with us to develop skills and to bring out our own creativeness. Each week Stoney challenges the group with a concept and then gives the freedom to experiment and explore the different mediums provided.  The exchange of ideas and support from within the group brings out creativity and the fun in trying something different. Unlike the normal evening class the course is more about developing abilities to create images with feeling and passion rather than learning to paint or draw in a particular style. And it’s much more fun! I have been able to revisit techniques already tried and to learn new ones, bringing back enthusiasm and confidence to take ideas and concepts forward to work on by myself.’  Di Waghorn
