Blackthorn Physic Garden Glass Sculptures

The Blackthorn Trust in Maidstone, Kent commissioned 5 glass sculptures for their new physic garden designed by Marian Boswall Landscape Architects.

The Blackthorn Trust is set in an old walled garden and provides a therapeutic environment for people with mental health and chronic pain issues. It has a Medical centre and a cafe and beautiful gardens where people can work. It is based on the principles of Rudolf Steiner.

One of the healing therapies is the Colour Light Therapy. This is done using intensely coloured glass panels which can have a powerful effect.

The glass sculptures therefore leant themselves to the scheme.

They were designed to be appealing and sympathetic to people in a fragile state. The designs are abstract and each one has it’s own character and special feeling. They are at once separate and part of a whole. The yew hedging will grow up and frame the glass.

The glass was set in metal bases set in concrete below ground level.

Each sculpture is 1800 mm x 600 mm with painted and air-brushed vitreous enamels that are fired.

The glass is laminated and toughened.

‘Water Reeds’

This sculpture is a water feature without the water!

Evoking the feeling of calm and reflectivity of water, it has a soft water-colour background and clean lines of water ripples and reeds.

Perfect for the urban garden but equally good anywhere!
